Review: -Jet Li appeared for 5 minutes total and doesnt even fight (seriously? Feels like he was kept in the movie (top-billed too!) just to lure asians to watch it. Yes Im an Asian.) -Action scenes are a yawn; all the been there done that. No suspense whatsoever; its even worse than a Micheal Bay film. -The climax fight was just 3 minutes tops and was like Stallone wasnt even trying. -PG-13 violence; Christmass knife stabs are now blood-less and bullets are now made of rubber since nobody bleeds or spurts blood after being fired upon by a minigun. Seriously? -The storyline is just a drag and dull; the worst in the series IMO. The young-bloods in this movie are just plain unlikeable, arrogant and disrespectful i.e. One of the young ones (I didnt even bother knowing his character name) screamed at Stallone to shut up. Are these kind of characters the ones were supposed to like?-Banderas was just wasted and everyone hates his character. He was supposed to be comic-relief, but instead hes just annoying. -Talking about comic-relief, the jokes were just bad. I remembered laughing with tears watching EX2; I barely grinned at this. Stallone said he wanted to go back to the dramatic storyline like EX1 and look what happened. Not dramatic and not funny.5/10 P/S: Just dont waste your time.

Review: Brilliantly acted, superbly written and as one would expect from a picture by Martin Scorsese, it is a masterclass of directorial craft.Showy when it needs to be, but also quiet and contemplative. The Wolf of Wall Street is the equivalent of something like Good Fellas or even more so Casino but set in the world of finance. The suits might be more expensive but the people who wear them are just as sick and violent as their street-mob counterparts. Sardonic in humor and unflinching in showing the depravity of its characters, it marks somewhat of a different approach to the world of stock-trading than Oliver Stones Wall Street.Where Stone seems more in line with Bertold Brecht who considered theater (or in this case film) a moral institution, does Scorsese take the position of the omnipresent observer of the dark side of the American and in many cases the human dream.Leonard DiCaprio gives another stellar performance of great intensity and even greater tragedy while this tale of corruption, greed and self-righteousness unfolds.Its a vast panorama that shows how during the last twenty-five to thirty years gullibility as well as our innate greed make all of us accomplices in this never-ending pyramid scheme far away from any reality.One could almost hear Scorseses clerical background come to the fore again, according to which nobody is without sin, and therefore we are all susceptible to corruption.It is our decision on which side we choose to live that makes the difference. For every individual but also society as a whole.

Review: After watching this film, Ive run out of glowing superlatives to describe it. First of all, a word on Matthew McConaughey. Ive always thought of him as a relative lightweight in the film world, the sexy leading man best designed for selling tickets and little else. I am happy to report that I was mistaken. Sadly, horribly mistaken. From the very first frame of this amazing movie, I was so amazed at his physical transformation that it took a half an hour just to adjust my eyes to the frail creature I saw before me. But it was real, just as his stellar performance both illuminated the way I look at the entire AIDS epidemic and the toll it takes on humanity, both gay and straight. This film happily avoided all previous clichés and typical treatments of the subject matter, transcending every other film I have seen regarding HIV/AIDS. For so long I have decried the serious lack of great film for ADULTS, with seemingly everything out today designed for pre-pubescent teenaged boys interesting in nothing more than mindless video games and moronic super hero sequels. As with many memorable independent films, this gem was elevated to heroic status with the incredible acting of McConaughey, in concert with the amazing Jaret Leto, providing the perfect foil to his perfect, character-driven role. Every, single reason for going to the movies is present in the glorious truth and humanity of this landmark effort, a must-see for anyone seeking superior acting in profusion. If theres a God in heaven, Matthew and Jaret should both win the Academy Awards for Best Performance by a Leading Man, and Best Supporting Actor. Each actor went far beyond mere acting in this film, becoming so entirely immersed into character that they stopped acting and just BECAME. Dont miss this important and moving film.

Review: Try not to hang around Fred.Im not sure what attracted me to Gia Coppolas directorial debut, Palo Alto, but I do know that 10 minutes into it I was already regretting my decision. Gia is trying to accomplish something similar to what her aunt Sofia did with Lost in Translation and Somewhere. In Palo Alto we also are introduced to the boring lives of the rich although instead of focusing on successful actors this time the focus is on High School teenagers trying to find their purpose in life. Not that Im not interested in these explorations, because I really enjoyed Lost in Translation, but I just didnt find any of these characters interesting. The entire story seemed pointless kind of like the lives of these characters which was probably the whole point of the movie, but it simply bored and disengaged me completely. I felt like Gia was desperately trying to tell us something through the beautiful cinematography and soulless characters which were portrayed rather authentically, but it just didnt mean anything to me. I couldnt help but feel that I had seen Emma Roberts play a similar character in the past in films which I actually enjoyed more (Its Kind of a Funny Story and The Art of Getting By came to mind). Perhaps I wasnt the intended target audience, but its hard for me to picture who they really were. I have heard some positive comments about how authentic these characters were and how well the teenagers captured that similar atmosphere they went through in High School, but it really didnt connect with me. The film seems to suffer from a slow pacing and an uneven story considering it struggles to balance the different story lines that the main characters are dealing with. I do have to give this film credit for not falling into the familiar conventions of the teenage romantic genre, but I also felt the lack of a heavier and more dramatic storyline hurt this film because it didnt seem to go anywhere at times.Francis Ford Coppolas granddaughter, Gia, has impressed critics with her debut film, and there are several similarities with her aunt Sofias work (which are explored through the similar cinematography and indie soundtrack). Gia not only directed this film, but she also adapted the screenplay based on James Francos short stories so her dedication to this film was complete. The performances were also pretty strong and as I mentioned before these characters felt authentic and believable. They fight their boredom by searching for love, getting high or drunk, and partying all the time. I didnt really have a problem with the performances, but what really hurt this film was the uneven story and the lack of a tighter narrative. Many scenes felt forced and the story didnt seem to go anywhere at times. There were a lot of things that just never led anywhere. I really enjoyed Jack Kilmers performance as Teddy, the kind teen who has a crush on April (Emma Roberts) but is too shy to express his feelings. He also seems to hang around the wrong crowd. Nat Wolff plays Fred, the self destructive teenager who is always getting his friend Teddy into trouble. Fred also has a destructive relationship with Emily (Zoe Levin) who he simply uses when he feels like it and pushes her away when not. April is also shy and torn between what she feels for Teddy and her soccer coach (played by James Franco) whose son she babysits during her free time. Franco plays himself really, but Emma Roberts has received most praise for her role. However for me the stand out was Val Kilmers son Jack, who really proved to have depth and charisma. The performances are earnest and authentic, but the story simply doesnt go anywhere and feels incomplete. It was hard to sympathize with these shallow and overprivileged kids as well, and I havent even mentioned the lack of a respectable adult figure in the entire film.

Review: Christine Webb (Shantel VanSanten) is recovering from the shock of her parents tragic demise a year ago and is now enrolled in Oregon Universtiy--stand-in for University of Oregon (UO). She is living with her older brother Bill (James Patrick Stuart) who is a state policeman, and his wife Dr. Susan Webb (Brittany Murphy), some kind of clinical psychologist. She seems to have forgiven her boyfriend James (John Robinson) who was driving when the train hit their stalled vehicle, though how someone who is handy with the machinery at the mill and who drives a motorcycle cant avoid a train or see it coming is beyond me. At any rate they are like to get engaged now that the impediment of her parents objection is removed, and they have a nice secluded honeymoon cottage all picked out.This is not an ideal picture. Christine is being stalked by a mysterious hooded character for unknown reasons and she thinks her dead mom is leaving cryptic messages for her from Shakespeare to warn her away from James. Even though shes living with a (state) cop, she goes to campus security and they call in the city police (UO security has since become a regular police force.) Add to that the County Sheriff patrolling their honeymoon cottage, and youd think shes covered, but they are long on police and short on security, if you get my drift.Being familiar with the campus and city and region where this film was made does not help quell my misgivings. Just the opposite. Christines parents are buried in the Pioneer Cemetery adjacent to campus and is at the nexus of several locations in the film: the classroom where the authorities have a word with a student, the building housing the swimming pool where Christine gets caught undressed, the statue of the pioneer mother (another dead woman watching over us), campus security headquarters, and the student housing office. I mean, if the film crew had an extra long extension cord, they wouldnt even have had to unplug going from one location to another.What really got me, though, is when Susan drops her daughter off at preschool, she doesnt leave her at the preschool building which is on the southwest corner of the cemetery but at the psychology building on the northeast corner of the graveyard. There are some deep psychological problems hinted at, but locals may think theyre looking in the wrong quarter.Something Wicked builds up the suspense with the camera slinking around to suspenseful background music until something wicked jumps out at us. This movie puts me in mind of Alfred Hitchcock, so masterfully is it done. The pacing is perfect and the sets oh so innocent looking. Brittany Murphy was the outstanding actress, though hers was not the lead part. Events just moved all the rest of them along as they did us.I was utterly surprised by how good this film was and am giving it a ten out of ten. Review: If you liked Four Weddings and a Funeral, then the similar mix of humour and pathos of Pride will really grab you. And if you fumed at the injustice of it all in Made in Dagenham, and cheered the women workers on as they made their hard-fought bid for fair play, then youll love this film. Its an amazing bit of political and social history brought alive on the screen, and great entertainment to boot.I lived in South Wales during the miners strike, and the characters in Pride were really well portrayed. They werent twee, or stereotypes. They were wholly believable.Absolutely loved it.

Review: Wow, here we go again: another generic possession movie is what I was thinking before watching this movie, but man was I surprised.What we have here people, is possibly the best possession movie since The Exorcist. After years of disappointment, we get a gosh darn thrilling, creepy, and interesting movie of this sub-genre. If youre a skeptic of the found footage style of filming, I would say this movie will change your mind. You get up close and personal with the protagonist and his descent into madness. And speaking of the protagonist, kudos to the lead actor because he carries the entire movie (as he should).The only gripe I have would be that the plot is underwhelming because if you watched any other possession movie, you know whats going to happen. Other than that, this movie represents the genre extremely well. Its a must see for horror fans!
